Our tour will start in the mountain village of Anoya. It is located at an altitude of 725 meters above sea level. There is hardly Crete even though one is so distinctive and unlike any other settlement. Only here you feel the true spirit of rebellious and proud Greek character, when you see easily walking down the street local Greek men with daggers in his belt and touched, looking at the Greek women dressed in traditional homespun national dresses. Despite the fact that Anoya was completely destroyed by the Germans in 1944, as the center of the Greek resistance to the invaders, after the war it was again restored and the national color conquers you from the first steps on it. There is still flourishing homespun production of natural fabrics - linen, cotton, wool. Characteristically, the whole process from the creation of threads to the dyeing of ready-made fabrics - all this happens right there, in small weaving workshops. The secrets of weaving are passed down from generation to generation. Only here You can 100% be assured that exhibited in numerous shops and stalls of goods - mats, tablecloths, cushion, curtains, napkins, towels, and so forth produced by local craftswomen by hand and exclusively from natural fabrics. The next stop is cave Sfendoni. It is located near the village of Zoniana. The cave can only be visited with a guide. Excursions are formed as tourists arrive and occur on average every 40 minutes. Near the entrance to the cave is equipped with a cafe and a gift shop, so even if you do not guess at the beginning of the tour, then spend time waiting for the next can be quite comfortable in the shade, sipping soft drinks. The cave itself is quite long and has more than 10 rooms. Since access to the most remote rooms is difficult, the first five are open for visiting and inspection. The total length of the route is about 300 meters. Interestingly, each of these five rooms has an individual name, for example, the farthest room is called the "Room of the lost child." The fact that in this room was discovered the skeleton of a small child who obviously could not find a way out and died of exhaustion. Though it happened a long time ago, approximately in the 12th century. The path followed by tourists lies on a specially made walkway with fences. Here you can not touch the walls with your hands, as supported by the natural micro world. Snails, bats and other animals live in the cave of Sphendoni. The whole cave is a continuous accumulation and a heap of stalactites and stalagmites, which often grow together in the form of bizarre columns. The effect of contemplation enhances the dynamic color backlight, which is famous for Sfendoni.
The next point of our program is a traditional mountain village Axos located in the Rethymno region on the Northern slope of mount Ida at an altitude of 510 m. Currently, the villagers are engaged in weaving, knitting and embroidery. But the real interest is the history of Axos which dates back to prehistoric times. Archaeological excavations in the area suggest that Axos was founded in the Minoan period. According to Greek legend, the city derived its name after the king of Oaxos, the son of Apollo and Akakallis. The heyday of Axos fell on the late Minoan period and continued constantly. The city flourished in the Byzantine and Venetian periods. Even during the reign of the Turkish invaders on the island of Crete Axos continued to flourish. A striking proof of what are the unique archaeological excavations carried out here. Archaeologists have found the remains of the ancient city, its houses and buildings, the graves of the Hellenistic period, vessels, coins, helmets, the Temple of Aphrodite. And on the hill above the city were found the remains of the walls of the Acropolis. But the main find - 45 Byzantine churches, decorated with mosaics and frescoes. Some churches have been restored, and the archaeological finds of the city of Axos are in the museums of the island of Crete. Axos had a perfect system of management, had the highest social status and was known not only on the island of Crete, but also far beyond its borders. And despite the fact that the legendary Axos is a little away from the modern village, this place has not lost its fame and significance. Axos is attractive primarily for its rich history and traditions. Here you can get acquainted with traditional Crete, taste real local cuisine. Not to mention the fresh mountain air and the unique atmosphere of the traditional village of Crete...
Next we head to the small traditional Cretan village of Fodele. On its cozy narrow streets you can find several shops selling local products of weaving production. A few hundred meters from the Fodele is a very beautiful and very old Venetian Church of Panagia (virgin). The Church dates back to the XIV century, but the basis for it was a three-nave Byzantine Basilica VII - XI century. Very close to the Church is the house-Museum of the famous Spanish artist Domenicos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco. Here in 1541 the future famous painter was born. The surrounding scenery, combining the riot of greenery and misty distance, and mountain peaks in these distances will surely please any visitor to Fodele. This is one of the greenest areas in Crete, aided by flowing through the village the river Panromantic that does not dry out until June. Not far from the Central square there is a Park - a favorite place of rest, both tourists and locals. And on Sunday, Fodele becomes a gathering place for residents of Heraklion and nearby villages in local taverns for Sunday lunch. Also, Fodele is known for its oranges and lemons, which grow everywhere here, and the air is filled with the sweet aroma of citrus.
