Orino gorge
(Gorge of the red butterflies)

An amazing day in paradise and a great adventure for all the family!

It’s one of the most known gorges of south-east Crete (Makrigialos-Ierapetra area). Its entrance is at the little forest of Koutsouras, which is just one km far from the littoral village of Koutsouras and 6 km from Makrigialos. Its end is just 2 kms far from Orino settlement. The best time of the year to cross it is winter or spring (December-June). You will find out wonderful landscape and small waterfalls are scattering along the route.

There is a path, which is a little bit difficult to cross in some places and you need to pay attention, because you may make a mistake on your way. You have to pay much more attention at the middle part of the gorge, which is not passable through the torrent, but through a dirt road at the western side.

We can divide the gorge in three parts. From Koutsouras as we ascend, there is the most verdant part, full of pine trees and a lot of impressive clif, which rise around. After one hour walking, the gorge leads to a cultivated upland, that has not the image of a gorge. After walking for half an hour, this cultivated upland comes to an end and the rocks rise around you soon again.

The last 2 kms (walking from south to north) are very impressive, because the view is abundant to the surrounding mountains. At the end of the gorge we had a marvelous surprise: A waterfall was coming out of the cleft of a rock. We can say, the last three waterfalls at Peristerionas position are some of the most beautiful in East Crete. Impressive also is the amount of water, very rare at the dry Makrigialos region. Sometimes, even during the summer months there is water flow in the gorge. An asphalted road (which connects Orino mountain village to the coastal area of Koutsouras) is very near. These last 2 kms are very uphill, but they reward the outdoorsy with the wonderful pictures of the surrounding area.

Unfortunately a fire had destroyed 70% of the pine trees of the area of the gorge in 1993. Today as you walk through the gorge, you can see the remains of the fire and the burnt pines, as witnesses of an older time, when the verdure was abundant everywhere.

If you want to walk the gorge from north (Orino Village) to south, there are several roads you can take to reach Orino Village.

  • The fastest one is to drive up from Kolimbos coastal settlement, just after Galini.

  • Another option, and a beautiful one, is to drive up to Agios Ioannis village (from Koutsounari, not far from Ierapetra) and from there (passing Psichro forest) to Schinokapsala and then up to Orino.

  • The third option is to drive up from Koutsouras to Stavrochori and from there to Orino. The road from Stavrochori to Orino is mostly dusty road and not always in super condition, but most of the time good enough for any car.

  • There is a forth road, the most adventurous and beautiful one, it is a mountain non-asphalt road from Thripti village, but you need a 4WD for that one.

Nearby the lush green and full of water springs Orino village we meet one of the most steep rivers of Crete. Its springs are located high on the plateau Abelia on the slopes of Thripti and Papouri mounts. They shortly form a river which crosses the village square and enters the rugged canyon of Orino. Descending the canyon along its riverbed requires canyoneering equipment. The river shapes incredible waterfalls with ponds and especially its last part is amazingly beautiful. The last three waterfalls at Peristerionas position are some of the most beautiful in Crete. Impressive also is the amount of water, very rare at dry East Crete. Even during the summer months there is water flow in the gorge.

The river continues to flow down and enters the canyon of Red Butterflies finishing at Koutsouras beach. Despite the fact that it has suffered major damage by a big fire in 1993, the vegetation in the Gorge with Red Butterflies is still lush and the gorge still constitutes a green lung of the warm eastern Crete. The gorge starts near the exit of Orino Gorge and ends at Koutsouras after 3-4 hour of walking (starting from Orino village and bypassing the wild part of Orino gorge). Along the route, there are signs indicating the path. At the beginning of the route, there are some small springs and waterfalls, which do not have water during summer months. However, in winter, the hiking in the gorge gets quite difficult. The gorge is named after the red butterflies that fly through the bushes and flowers, forming a truly rare sight! Unfortunately, in the years following the fire, their population has significantly decreased.
