Elafonisi

If you would like to discover a small island covered with sand dunes and small trees, sandy beaches and tropical waters, then you must visit Elafonissi, one of the most exotic beaches of Crete.

Elafonisi is located at the south-western point of Crete, in one of the most spectacular and unique places. Once occupied by pirates, now it is a popular destination for those who want to spend a day on a stunning tropical beach, while staying in Crete.

Elafonisi beach became so popular because of its unusual colour. The pink sand, which is the result of thousands of broken seashells, lends a special charm to the small coves and the tiny beaches, reminding travellers of a lost paradise. Take a swim in the crystal clear tropical waters and relax under the hot Cretan sun!

Just a few meters away from the beach you will see the uninhabited island of Elafonisi. In order to get there, you will need to wade through the shallow waters of the lagoon. The island of sand dunes, juniper trees and sand lilies will fascinate you by its wild beauty. Home to more than 110 plants, it is a protected area by Natura 2000.

And if you are bored of lying on the beach, then take a walk and explore the island. There are many tiny beaches, which are not so crowded as the lagoon and if you are lucky you may find a desert place even during the high season.  If you get further to the opposite side of the island, you will find the small lighthouse, the enchanting chapel of St. Irene, the Cave of Memory and unforgettable views over the Libyan Sea.
